You should sign up for something physically hard in 2023

Let me start off by saying that hard is relative. For some it might be running their first 5k, for others, it might be doing their first Ironman triathlon.

Why?

I think there are a lot of benefits to doing something physically hard, here are some of my favorites.

Officially doing something makes it easier

When you sign up for something, you have a specific date. You know exactly how long until then, and (hopefully) you know what to do to get there. It’s easier to stay more consistent with your training because you realize that if you start skipping workouts here and there, the actual race will be more difficult — maybe even impossible.

Daily exercise

To reach your goal, you need exercise. The bigger the goal, the more work you have to put into it. In this case, that might be exercising daily. Not only does that make you feel better daily, with increased energy, etc. — but it’s also good for “long-term health”.

Crossing the finish line

Races are fun. You meet like-minded people and there’s always a good vibe. There are people cheering. If your goal is big enough, you are unsure if you’re able to finish the race when you’re standing at the starting line. That makes the feeling when you actually cross the finish line so much better.

Compound effect

After the race, you reflect on your journey. Then go after the next thing. When you keep doing these hard things, you realize you can do anything you set your mind to. You’re doing as much exercise for your mind as for your body. You then start applying everything these hard physical challenges have taught you to your “normal life”, and you level up in everything you do.
